BAJA cyclehome

the Baja cycle is a pedal car styled after the off-road competition vehicles that are popular in the southern California's Baja peninsula.

        NEW for 2006

See bottom of page for electric power information!

Can you say s-t-r-e-t-c-h, the new Baja is longer to accommodate drivers to 5'7" and weighting 160lbs.  The frame has been redesigned to use standard bicycle wheels,  I have saved the best part for last, With this design You can use a 5 0r  6 speed derailleur transmission.

The rear wheels come from a salvage 20" bike and the front 16" wheels come from a second donor bike.  Like all American speedster pedal vehicles it is designed to be tough, YET simple to build. Because the Baja CYCLE is constructed of PVC tubing, it is very easy to CUSTOMIZE.  (You could call it a big Lego KIT).  As With all quality recumbent cycle , Several methods were employed to keep the weight down and still maintain the strength of this bike car .

you might ask, "Where do you get the seat and steering wheel ?  the one in the picture came from an auto supplier, but a child's car seat works great.  the plans show you how to make the steering wheel from pvc. The new Baja incorporates caliper brakes on both rear wheels.

This is the fun part of American Speedster pedal cars, your ideas and MY plans, working to together to make one awesome bike car.

The Baja cycle makes an excellent school project.

What can I learn from the plans?  The correct dimensions for all the tubing.   the order of assembly to build a frame that is strong, light And square. plus, the steering geometry, so it will not drag a wheel in a turn, the drive and braking systems,  painting tips, seat mounting.  how to build a steering wheel from PVC pipe and, how to add a luggage carrier on the back.

  that's a lot of "how to's ", for 18 bucks!

what tools will I need to pull this off?

  1.   SAW or shears TO CUT THE pvc.
  2.   ELECTRIC drill.
  3.   heat gun for making the pvc steering wheel.
  4.   vise for bending.
  5.   Hack saw
  6.  basic NASCAR hand tools.

What are the spec's?:

  1. the BAJA is 39" wide axle -  nut to axle nut:.
  2. over all length is 68".
  3. it stands just shy of 4 ft.
  4. the weight is 70 lbs,
  5. there are 32"- 42" from seat back to furthers pedal.
  6. the seat is adjustable as well as crank position.
  7. 33" from seat bottom to underside of roll bar.
  8. 20" wheels are at the rear.
  9. 16" ARE AT THE Front.
  10. the turning radius is 8'.
  11. Carrying capacity is 160 pounds.
  12. The cost to build is about $350.00.
  13. this is a great school project.

  The plans are $18.00 plus $2.00 s&h

Question, can an electric drive be added to the Baja ? I have tested the Sun Coaster with the electric wheel hub and since the two cycles use identical drives I am sure it can be done.  The electric wheel will  replace the right rear wheel and should require no modifications to the original design.  more info. on Sun Coaster page.
